StartUp Tasmania is the independent voice and grassroots community hub for Tasmanian entrepreneurs, founders, and innovators. We exist to champion, connect, and support people building new businesses and innovative projects across Tasmania.
Startup Tasmania, Inc. was founded in 2011. The founders had previously been involved with OpenCoffee Hobart, a social gathering with a digital/entrepreneuristic bent when they took the opportunity to form a support organisation for the fledgling Tasmanian startup scene.
The organisation started Tasmania’s first co-working space in the basement of 71 Murray Street, Hobart.
When the basement space became unavailable, a number of members pulled together and established The Typewriter Factory, initially as individual office spaces with Startup Tasmania as one of the founding tenants. They operated a (much smaller) shared office in The Typewriter Factory for a few months until they expanded into a larger co-working space.
StartUp Tasmania has been through a lot. The challenges of running a networking and community group that thrived on bringing people together in person really came to the fore when navigating COVID-19 times and the association was almost wound up in November of 2023. It was at this time that the current Executive Committee was elected and StartUp Tasmania's current iteration was launched.
